The frozen drink formula

Almost every frozen cocktail on this site follows the same rule of thumb: about 3 ounces of liquid per drink to 1½ cups of ice, with spirits kept to roughly a third of the liquid. Alcohol doesn't freeze, so heavy pours make a soupy drink. Frozen fruit can replace part of the ice for thicker, more flavorful slushes.

  1. Liquids first. They help the blades catch the ice.
  2. Pulse, then blend. A few short pulses crack the ice before a 30–45 second blend on high.
  3. Adjust. Too thin: add ice. Too thick: add a splash of juice or water.
